BBAF: August 2009 Angel

Each month a special child with a metabolic disorder is chosen to be the foundation's Angel.

Angel for August 2009
This month's Angel is Zach. Zach is a 17 year old young man who was diagnosised with short chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, often referred to as SCAD.

Due to the lack of a comprehensive newborn screening, Zach received his diagnosis one day after his 12th birthday.

As the mother of a metabolic child, I was eager to talk to Zach and ask him questions. In a way, it was like getting to peek into the mind of my child 16 years from now.

I was anxious to hear Zach’s experiences and perspective. Zach is in a unique position to be able to be a ‘voice’ for our children.

His mother, Jill, is now the President of Save the Babies Through Screening Foundation. The organization's goal is to promote comprehensive newborn screenings in order to identify and treat metabolic disorders.
